Protection Against The Sea on Tenerife - In Cubes

[The outer protection against the sea at Puerto de la Cruz is created of cement cubes]

Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean, with little protection from the other Canary Islands, and consequently the meeting between ocean and island can be quite powerful.

[En newly made cement cube]

To counter the erosion caused by the ocean, the coast line is being strengthened around the island, with the help of app. 2,5 by 2,5 meter by 2,5 meter large concrete cubes.

[The cement arrives by truck]

The cubes are being cast close to the places where they are to be used, as they are obviously very heavy and difficult to transport. First concrete is poured into the casts.

[The cement is mixed with rock]

At regular intervals pebbles are added, to strengthen the concrete, and to replace at least some of the more expensive concrete.

[The form is filled with cement]

The cast is filled, and now the concrete is left to harden, until it is ready to be taken to its future resting place.

[In this case it is taking place behind the football stadium]

In order to be able to get the cubes out of the cast, iron rods are put into the cast during the production process, which can be used to lift the cubes out of the cast, and transport them.

[The cement cubes are now popular habitats for the crabs]

As it is often seen in nature, such things are quickly adopted by the "local inhabitants", which include them in their lives.

[It is a wonder in itself to observe how the crabs are able to hang on to the cement cubes with the waves washing over them]

This is also the case with the concrete cubes. Although the water flowing and gushing around the cubes can exert quite considerable forces, the local crabs seem to enjoy their new habitat.
