Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean, with little protection from the other Canary Islands, and consequently the meeting between ocean and island can be quite powerful.
To counter the erosion caused by the ocean, the coast line is being strengthened around the island, with the help of app. 2,5 by 2,5 meter by 2,5 meter large concrete cubes.
The cubes are being cast close to the places where they are to be used, as they are obviously very heavy and difficult to transport. First concrete is poured into the casts.
At regular intervals pebbles are added, to strengthen the concrete, and to replace at least some of the more expensive concrete.
The cast is filled, and now the concrete is left to harden, until it is ready to be taken to its future resting place.
In order to be able to get the cubes out of the cast, iron rods are put into the cast during the production process, which can be used to lift the cubes out of the cast, and transport them.
As it is often seen in nature, such things are quickly adopted by the "local inhabitants", which include them in their lives.
This is also the case with the concrete cubes. Although the water flowing and gushing around the cubes can exert quite considerable forces, the local crabs seem to enjoy their new habitat.
